The Parks and Recreation Department has installed new lightning prediction technology at Randol Mill Family Aquatic Center (1924 Randol Mill Park Road) and Bad Königshofen Family Aquatic Center (2800 W Sublett Road). This action followed an exhaustive research process of other cities and schools that use this technology to ensure a higher level of public safety at various outdoor venues including pools and sports fields.
All swimming pools managed by the Parks and Recreation Department have a very clear operational and public notification process during bad weather events. “While staff will continue to closely observe and monitor weather conditions, the new lightning prediction technology will add yet another layer of safety for our customers”, Aquatics Manager Maria Campbell said.
“Facility customers can expect to see a light strobe and hear one loud horn blast for a period of about 15 seconds when the threat of lightning is high. Once the threat is gone, the lightning prediction equipment will advise staff with three short blasts.”, said Campbell. “The systems at both pools will operate from 9am to 10 pm each day through the summer months. They will be turned off for the season after the Labor Day holiday.”
